Voted best small town

In the United States for food in the 2013 Rand McNally Best of the Road Competition, San Mateo is a creativity hub.

It’s the birthplace of YouTube, AdMob, Epocrates, the high-tech Draper University, and the Draper Collective, a pop-up retail space that nurtures entrepreneurs.

The community is equally well known for another innovative element: its food!

Founded in 1894 as an agricultural community, you could say that food is embedded in San Mateo’s DNA.

Three are Michelin rated

Many are otherwise critically acclaimed, and all take full advantage of the region’s fresh produce. Adding to the mix of restaurants, cafes, bistros, diners, and food trucks are green grocers, gourmet shops, bakeries, confectionaries, cheesemongers, and wine-tasting rooms. Menus are extraordinarily diverse, with cuisines from each corner of the world.

Weekly farmers markets, monthly Dishcrawls, and annual food-related events fill the calendar and continue to introduce the epi-curious to new food pairings. All of these ingredients (and more) make San Mateo a great place for a culinary experience.
